The police have arrested four additional suspects in connection with the murder of Francis Frimpong, a devoted supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, bringing the total number of suspects detained to seven.
The newly arrested individuals include Isaac Ofosu, Augustine Yeboah, Elizabeth Ntiriwaa, also known as “Akosua Black Chinese,” and another female suspect whose identity has been withheld.
A police source confirmed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the suspects were arraigned before a Circuit Court on Friday, where the court ordered that they remain in police custody until Monday, February 10, 2025. Three of the suspects are expected to reappear before the court on Monday, February 17, 2025.
Among those already in custody are Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the owner of Nsoatreman FC and former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Joseph Kyeremeh, and Agyemang Duah Owusu. These individuals have been formally charged by the Sunyani District Court ‘B.’
During their initial court appearance, presided over by Judge Eric Daning, Baffour-Awuah and Kyeremeh were granted bail of GHC 500,000 each with three sureties. They face charges of abetment to commit a crime, to wit murder, under Sections 20(1) and 46 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).
However, Owusu, a police inspector, has been charged with murder and remains in police custody.
The tragic incident followed violent clashes after Asante Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League Match Day 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Koramansah Park, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Kotoko. The game saw heightened tensions both on and off the pitch, with four red cards issued to players from both teams. However, tempers flared even further after the final whistle, resulting in violent altercations among rival supporters that ultimately led to Frimpong’s untimely death.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to ensure justice is served.
