Why did you appoint Anton Schafer as Technical Advisor after rejecting him as coach?

Sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah has raised concerns about the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) appointment of German coach Winfried Anton Schafer as the Technical Advisor of the Black Stars.

According to him, the appointment comes as a surprise because the GFA had previously rejected Schafer’s application to be the Black Stars’ head coach.

The Peace FM journalist bemoaned the fact that a coach who was not deemed competent by the GFA would later be hired to advise the head coach of the Black Stars.

Kwaku Yeboah asserted that Schafer’s appointment is problematic, thereby criticizing the GFA’s decision.

“I am unsure whether the GFA will get rid of the Technical Advisor role. Interestingly, Winfried Schafer, who was appointed as the technical advisor, had applied for the Black Stars job but was not selected.

“He was not even interviewed or shortlisted, so what has suddenly changed that we need his advice to make the Black Stars better? Why is he needed to advice the coach? What kind of attitude is this?” he questioned while speaking on Peace FM.

He blamed the sports ministry for not holding the GFA accountable for certain decisions regarding football activities.

Yeboah called out former sports minister Mustapha Ussif for his inability to exert leadership in his dealings with the GFA.

“Former sports minister Mustapha Ussif was not firm enough to deal with the current GFA despite our consistent calls. A German coach was given a housing facility as technical director, yet we complained about coaches sleeping in hotels, and he could not utter a word,” he added.

The criticism comes on the back of the GFA’s appointment of Winfried Schafer, a German coach who won the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Cameroon in 2002, as Technical Advisor of the Black Stars.
