I’ll launch ‘Mahama Cares’ to support individuals with chronic illnesses – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and implementing measures to reduce the cost of treating chronic illnesses.

During his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Central Region on February 6, Mr. Mahama underscored the need for healthcare improvements and announced plans to launch the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.

The fund aims to provide financial support to individuals suffering from chronic health conditions, including kidney and liver diseases, high blood pressure, and cardiac ailments.

“In healthcare, we will continue to improve our hospitals and continue to improve all levels of our healthcare system.

“We’ll prioritise healthcare and I will launch the Ghana Medical Care trust fund, popularly called Mahama Cares to assist individuals with chronic diseases like kidney, liver disease, high blood pressure, and cardiac problems. And so, this Fund will assist in alleviating the cost of treatment.”

Additionally, he announced plans to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy, ensuring that the full amount is allocated to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

This, he explained will enable the Authority to pay for treatment at healthcare facilities for National Health Insurance cardholders.

“We’re going to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme Levy so that the full amount of the levy goes to the National Insurance Authority. So that they can pay for facilities for the treatment that is given to people holding National Health Insurance cards.”
