The autocratic posture of the Speaker is very dangerous

General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s suspension of three of its Members of Parliament on Friday, January 31, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 3, 2025, and signed by the General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party described the actions as intimidating and a deliberate attempt to undermine the Minority’s role in holding the government accountable.

“The party sees this selective, and autocratic posture of the Speaker as very dangerous, with all these actions packaged to cow the Minority into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the government accountable.

“The party calls on all, especially its Members of Parliament, to be assured of the Party’s unflinching support at all material times and fully supports the press conference of the Minority Caucus on February 3, 2025 and its subsequent briefings,” it indicated.

The party vowed to resist all forms of intimidation and unfairness in the application of parliamentary rules.

“The party hereby reiterates its position that it stands with its eighty-eight (88) gallant members to address all forms of repression and unfairness in the application of the rules governing Parliament and the nation,” it added.
