Meet the four ‘media gurus’ appointed by President Mahama into his government

Since assuming office on January 7, 2025, President John Mahama has been assembling his government, making major appointments, including ministerial positions and chief executives for various public institutions.

He has appointed individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, leveraging their expertise to aid in governance over the next four years. Among these appointees are four notable media personalities.

GhanaWeb takes a look at four experienced media practitioners serving in the government of President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Randy Abbey

Until his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Randy Abbey had been the host of the morning show, Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV since 2002.

Dr. Abbey first worked with Radio Gold but was never given a permanent role before being recruited by his colleague, sports journalist Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who was then with Choice FM.

He teamed up with Yaw Ampofo Ankrah to produce one of the best sports shows on radio between 1998 and 1999. At the time, Choice FM boasted veteran presenters such as Tommy Annan Forson and Edward Faakye.

Dr. Randy Abbey has undoubtedly played a key role in positively shaping the media landscape in Ghana with his rich analysis of issues and his program-hosting acumen.

Stan Dogbe

Stan Dogbe has been appointed by President John Dramani Mahama as the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations.

Dogbe has extensive experience in the media industry, having worked as a journalist for over 25 years.

Before entering politics, he worked at Accra-based Joy FM, rising to become the Head of Talk Programmes. For many years, he produced the station’s morning show.

He was a senior editor in the newsroom, known for his keen eye for news gathering and packaging.

Since 2012, Stan Dogbe has worked with President Mahama as his Special Assistant and Director of Communications. Before that, he served as a Presidential Aide to the late President John Evans Atta Mills and Vice President Mahama.

During President Mahama’s previous tenure, Mr. Dogbe managed the President’s communication strategy, ensuring a seamless flow of information between the presidency, government, and the public.

Known for his tireless work ethic and strong organizational skills, he continues to play a crucial role in shaping Mahama’s public image.

He was responsible for all backend communications and campaign operations for the John Mahama 2020 and 2024 campaigns, overseeing communications, digital campaigns, and operations.

Beyond his work in politics, Stan Dogbe is also the owner of the fast-growing television station WoezorTV.

Shamima Muslim

Shamima Muslim has been appointed Deputy Presidential Spokesperson by President John Dramani Mahama.

A broadcaster, gender advocate, and development communicator, Shamima Muslim brings a wealth of experience to her new role at the Presidency.

Before transitioning into politics, she was a distinguished journalist and a trailblazer in media advocacy and gender equality.

Shamima’s notable career in journalism includes roles at Citi FM and Metro TV, where she gained recognition for her insightful reporting and engaging presentations.

One of the defining moments of her career was co-hosting the 2012 Vice-Presidential Debate for Ghana’s elections, a testament to her credibility and influence.

She was also selected as Ghana’s pioneer representative at President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative in 2010.

At Citi FM, she hosted Citi Eyewitness News, asking hard-hitting and relevant questions that held state actors accountable while educating the public on national issues.

She is the Founder and Convener of the Alliance for Women in Media Africa (AWMA), a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the visibility and impact of women in the media.

James Agyenim-Boateng

James Agyenim-Boateng has been appointed by President John Mahama as the Managing Director of SIC Insurance Company.

Before joining politics, James Agyenim-Boateng hosted Radio Gold’s morning show for several years, where he posed tough and probing questions to public officials on national issues.

Through hard work, he later rose to become the Chief Executive Officer of Radio Gold.

He was succeeded as the morning show host at Radio Gold by the incumbent Tamale North Member of Parliament, Alhassan Suhuyini.

James also worked as a presenter at Madina-based Net 2 Television.

He is a lawyer and communications consultant with extensive experience.

His distinguished career includes serving as a Presidential Staffer in the Office of the Vice President from 2013 to January 2017, as well as a former Deputy Minister of Information.

Renowned for his expertise in political communication, negotiation, business planning, government operations, and advertising, Agyenim-Boateng brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
