Ghana loses billions annually to illicit financial flows – MFWA

Executive Director of Technology Integration Point Ventures, Dr. Bishop Akologo, has revealed that Ghana loses billions of dollars annually to illicit financial flows (IFFs), a challenge that undermines the country’s development efforts.

He shared this during a Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) training workshop in Bolgatanga.

Executive Director of Green Tax Youth Africa, Benaiah Nii Addo, explained that IFFs encompass illegal practices such as money laundering, bribery, tax evasion, and trade mispricing.

These activities deprive the country of critical resources needed for development.

The disclosure was made at a two-day capacity-building workshop for journalists in the Upper East Region, organized by MFWA to enhance media understanding and reporting on IFFs in Ghana.

Programme Officer for MFWA and Chairman of the Upper East Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. William Nlanjerbor Jalulah said the aim of the is to empower journalists with the skills to educate the public and investigate issues related to IFFs.

“As an organization that collaborates closely with the media, it is crucial for us to build their capacity to report effectively on these issues. This program seeks to enhance journalists’ skills in addressing illicit financial flows, thereby promoting awareness and education among the public” Mr. Jalulah added.
