He Should Be Arrested – Reactions as a Special Voter Records and Posts His Vote Online

Special voting for Ghana’s 2024 general elections began today, December 2, 2024, providing an opportunity for security personnel, media practitioners, and election officials to cast their votes ahead of the main election. However, one incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for legal action.

A young man, believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, and identified on TikTok as Bra Alhassan, has stirred controversy by recording and publicly sharing who he voted for. The video, which has since gone viral, shows him openly indicating his choice for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In the video, Bra Alhassan is heard saying, “No yawa. No devil will work against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He will win this election in the name of Allah.” While the man’s identity remains unclear—whether he is a journalist, police officer, or simply a voter—many Ghanaians argue that he should have known his actions were unlawful.

Recording or publicly disclosing one’s vote is a direct violation of Ghana’s electoral laws, which emphasize the secrecy of the ballot as a cornerstone of democratic elections. The incident has ignited a heated debate on social media, with many calling for his immediate arrest and prosecution.

“This is stupidity at its peak. If the law goes after him now, he’ll be begging for mercy,” one Twitter user remarked. Another added, “He must be arrested. We cannot allow such acts to undermine the integrity of our elections.”

Legal experts and election monitors have also weighed in, emphasizing that actions like these not only breach electoral rules but could also influence or intimidate other voters. “Such behavior threatens the credibility of the electoral process. The Electoral Commission and law enforcement must take swift action to prevent a recurrence,” a political analyst noted.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has reminded all voters to adhere strictly to the rules governing the election process. In a statement released earlier, the commission urged Ghanaians to respect the sanctity of the ballot, warning that violations would be met with severe penalties.

As the video continues to generate buzz, it remains to be seen whether authorities will act decisively to address the situation and send a clear message about upholding Ghana’s electoral laws.
