Partisan politics is threatening Ghana’s democracy – Kwame Owusu Danso

Vice presidential candidate Elijah Kwame Owusu Danso, also known as KOD, is concerned about Ghana’s democracy, warning that it is being undermined by “extreme partisanship and self-serving political interests”.

In an interview on JoyNews, KOD expressed dismay over what he described as a lack of patriotism in the nation’s political sphere, particularly in Parliament.

“Our democracy is being threatened, and we are sitting there unconcerned. We are so married to our political parties that we are blinded by the exigencies of harm,” he stated.

When asked by News Desk host Fostina Sarfo if the state of Parliament was purely politically motivated, KOD said, “Absolutely, because there are no independent-minded members of Parliament; all of them are married to their political ideologies,” he said.

He criticised Parliament’s actions as a facade of democracy, with political party interests taking precedence over the nation’s welfare.

“When you pierce the veil and go behind this attempt, you will notice that every single thing they do is in the interest of their political parties, not in the collective good of the Ghanaian people,” KOD added.

Elijah Kwame Owusu Danso urged Ghanaians to confront these challenges and prioritize patriotism over partisanship.

“Why are we doing this to ourselves? Are we so partisan to the point where we will relegate patriotism to the background?” he asked, calling for the nation to “put on their thinking caps” and address these systemic issues.

His remarks come amidst heightened political tension following the Supreme Court’s ruling that declared Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to announce four parliamentary seats vacant unconstitutional.

The Speaker, before the ruling, had adjourned parliamentary sittings indefinitely, leaving many Ghanaians questioning the future of the legislative process.

For KOD, the solution is straightforward: “We need to put Ghana first.”
