Resign as GFA president now!” – Kurt Okraku told after Ghana’s failure to qualify for 2025 AFCON in 20 years

‘Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku and his Executive Council have been urged to resign by Kudjoe Fianoo, President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years.

Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Angola at the Estádio 11 de Novembro sealed their fate, marking their first AFCON absence since 2004 and sparking widespread disappointment among fans of the four-time African champions.

Speaking on Luv FM, Fianoo called for accountability, highlighting Ghana’s declining fortunes under the current administration.

He pointed to the team’s inability to progress past the group stages in the last two AFCON tournaments as evidence of poor leadership.“AFCON qualification has been automatic for Ghana over the past two decades, even with fierce competition,” Fianoo said. “Now, with 24 teams qualifying, we are still struggling. If we fail to qualify, there’s no greater failure.

The current leadership must accept responsibility and resign. In five years, we’ve changed six coaches—what excuse do they have for this abysmal performance?

”The former Ashgold CEO emphasized that the failure to qualify reflects a lack of progress under Okraku’s tenure, despite significant financial investment.

“We’ve participated in AFCON tournaments in Cameroon and Ivory Coast but couldn’t get past the group stages. The resources invested in these failures, especially given Ghana’s economic struggles, are unacceptable.

To expect applause for these results is simply disappointing,” Fianoo added.Ghana will conclude their qualification campaign on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium.

However, the final match will only serve as a formality, with Ghana already eliminated from the tournament.
