Ghana’s Black Stars failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2004 after a 1-1 draw with Angola in Luanda. Coach Otto Addo made notable changes to the lineup from the previous match against Sudan.
Nations FC defender Razak Simpson and midfielder Michael Baidoo earned their first starts for the national team, while Abdul Manaf Nurudeen was handed the goalkeeping duties over Lawrence Ati-Zigi. The Black Stars took an early lead through Jordan Ayew’s stunning free-kick in the 19th minute.
Positioned 35 yards out after Mohammed Kudus was fouled, Ayew struck a brilliant shot past the Angolan goalkeeper, giving Ghana hope of securing a vital win. Angola responded with an opportunity to equalize minutes later when Gideon Mensah conceded a penalty.
However, debutant goalkeeper Nurudeen produced a heroic save to deny M’Bala Nzola and maintain Ghana’s lead. Michael Baidoo came close to doubling the advantage before halftime, but his shot was blocked by the Angolan defense, leaving Ghana with a slender 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Angola capitalized on a lapse in Ghana’s defense. Substitute Zini connected with a cross from Milson to equalize in the 66th minute, leaving the Black Stars scrambling for a winner.
Despite Kudus’ near miss and a golden chance for substitute Ransford Yeboah, who saw his close-range effort saved, Ghana failed to regain the lead. Nurudeen was called into action again in the dying moments, making a crucial save to deny Angola a late winner.
The draw leaves Ghana unable to secure qualification for the AFCON, marking the end of a nearly two-decade streak of appearances at the continental showpiece.
The Black Stars will conclude their campaign with a match against Niger in Accra on Monday, November 18.
