Inusah Fuseini
Inusah Fuseini, former National Democratic Congress, NDC Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, has urged Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling declaring his declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant as unconstitutional.
This comes amid a history of tension between the NDC and the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court’s 5-2 decision on November 12, 2024, overturned Bagbin’s declaration, which affected NDC’s Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah, NPP’s Andrew Amoako Asiamah, Kwadjo Asante, and Cynthia Morrison.
The Speaker’s move aimed to shift Ghana’s hung parliament in the NDC’s favor.
NDC’s Criticisms
Former President John Mahama has previously expressed dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court.
In 2020, Mahama criticized the Court’s decision on the voters’ register case. Other NDC members have also questioned the Court’s impartiality.
However Fuseini’s call for Bagbin to respect the ruling marks a departure from the NDC’s previous stance.
He emphasized that despite potential disagreements, the Speaker must obey the Supreme Court’s decision.
Reactions from NDC Members
Other NDC members have echoed Fuseini’s sentiments.
A former Deputy Minister of Education, Alex Kyeremeh, stated that the Speaker should accept the ruling and move forward.
However, some NDC supporters have expressed dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision, citing concerns about the impartiality of the judiciary.
Implications
The Supreme Court’s ruling has significant implications for Ghana’s parliamentary dynamics.
The NDC’s efforts to challenge the decision may further exacerbate tensions between the party and the judiciary.
