A popular Ghanaian blogger known as Edhub has caused stir on his X platform after sharing a sensitive video. The video shows a disturbing encounter between a bus conductor, popularly known as ‘trotro mate’ and a Ghanaian prison officer. The bus conductor was charged with impersonation of a Ghana Prison Service officer and trying to parade himself as one while in his bus conducting his operations. From the conductor’s words, the uniform belonged to his dad, who served in the prison service and had died. However, given the personal relationship between the two, it becomes apparent that various aspects of law and ethics were violated by his decision to wear it while performing bus duties.
In Ghana, clothing related to national security organizations such as the Prison Service contains certain power and/or identity. Even if samples are utilized erroneously, the general public might deem it impersonation, thus causing harm to the institution’s reputation. Although the conductor may not have had any bad intentions by wearing this uniform, he was not wearing the uniform for professional reasons. It is important to know that, when this uniform is worn by a civilian in general public places, it defies the purpose of the uniform—both as a symbol and as a logistic tool.
In view of this, the arrest seems justified under the premise of order and by observing the distinctiveness of the officer’s uniform. Still, having a qualified chance may be useful; if only indeed his father served, the young man could be explained the delicacy of such uniforms, perhaps saving him from a severe punishment.
