Galamsey: Ministers, NPP executives responsible for illegal mining menace

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Director of Elections, has accused government ministers and appointees under President Akufo-Addo’s administration of leading illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, which have severely polluted the country’s water bodies.

Dr. Omane Boamah claims that leaders within the NPP government and party officials have repeatedly encroached on forest reserves to engage in illegal mining, yet the legal system has not held them accountable.

Speaking to residents in Boadua, Akwatia Constituency, during the second day of his five-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr. Omane Boamah pledged that a future John Dramani Mahama government would implement strong, reliable measures to promote responsible mining practices and protect the environment.

“We know that some people are roaming about saying a whole lot of stuff about illegal mining. The leaders of those same people, including the regional executives, ministers and DCEs have led the pollution of the Water bodies, due to that those who are responsibly mining are being dragged, and we will not allow them to cover up their irresponsible mining with the responsible ones for them to be dragged”.

“The flag bearer for the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, will provide access to young miners in responsible small-scale mining to acquire mining equipment through a government support scheme.
