We’re not legally mandated to provide summary of certified voter register

The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that it is not legally obligated to provide a summary or additional statistics alongside the certified voters register.

This clarification follows a request from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for further data beyond the final register, which the EC presented to political parties ahead of the December 7 elections.

On Wednesday, November 6, the NDC voiced concerns after receiving the final voter register from the EC, requesting detailed statistics to accompany the document. They argued that additional data would enhance transparency in the electoral process.

In response, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa addressed journalists in Accra, stated that while the commission has provided the certified register to all political parties to ensure transparency, it is not legally required to supply a supplementary summary or statistical breakdown.

“The fact that there is no summary does not make it not certified. The register as you see and as you have, is a certified register. If you choose to reject it, that’s your prerogative, you can do so. This is a request you are making, it is not binding in law.

“This is something we’ve been doing since time immemorial. I believe from Mr. Tettey Yorku who has been here since 1952. They have never given a summary to anybody.

“So if is your request, that is fine, and we are not obliged to give it to you. But I think as a commission that believes in transparency, that accommodates and is responsive to the needs of its stakeholders, we do not have a problem generating the detailed summary for you. But we are not obliged.”
