Patsy Widakuswara, White House Bureau Chief for Voice of America (VOA), has raised concerns about the upcoming 2024 US elections, set to take place on Tuesday, November 5.
In a conversation with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV‘s The Point of View, Widakuswara highlighted the alarming levels of divisiveness, rancour, and vulnerability that distinguish this election from previous ones.
The 2024 US presidential election is indeed a highly contentious and closely watched event, with polls indicating a tight race between candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
“I covered the US elections since 2003, and so 21 years now and yes, this has been the closest I have covered in terms of polling. It is also the most porous, most divisive, the most vitriolic. A lot of crazy things are happening in this election.
“…Donald Trump was indicted with 34 counts of felony and Joe Biden dropped out of the race, Kamala Harris drove a whirlwind campaign in about three and half months and we have a situation which is really down to the wire, it is +1% or -1%.”
She observed that there seems to be apprehension among US citizens and people living in the US about post-election violence.
“There’s really a huge concern about post-election disturbance… That is the level of anxiety and concern people are facing right now, certainly being faced by voters, analysts.”
She mentioned that the economy, immigration, and abortion are among the top issues driving voter decisions, with significant differences in priorities between Harris and Trump supporters.
Widakuswara’s concerns about the election’s divisive nature are echoed by experts, who point to the potential for electoral violence, voting disputes, and hacking concerns.
With the election taking off on Tuesday, tensions are running high, and the outcome remains uncertain.
