Staff at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital in the Akuapem North Municipality in the Eastern Region are set to stage a peaceful protest today, November 1.
They are protesting the recurring incidents of high-speed vehicle collisions involving both hospital staff and patients on the road adjacent to the facility.
Their action aims to bring attention to the tragic and dangerous conditions on this busy stretch of the road.
Since May 2024, over six fatalities have been recorded, with most victims being patients visiting the hospital for medical care and, in some cases, hospital staff members.
This call to action has gained urgency following the recent death of a registered nurse who was struck and fatally injured by a speeding vehicle after leaving her shift on Wednesday.
Her untimely death fueled a wave of grief and anger among her colleagues, who see the incident as emblematic of a preventable risk that has gone unaddressed for too long.
According to the aggrieved nurses and hospital staff, this tragic accident is only the latest in a series of incidents that highlight the urgent need for speed regulation on the road.
Bengalaxy Elorm Attipoe, the protest’s convenor and spokesperson for the Tetteh Quashie Memorial Hospital staff, has been vocal in conveying the group’s frustrations and reasons for taking action.
He explained that the protest, expected to last approximately two hours, is intended to send a powerful message to both the local community and regional authorities about the urgent need for road safety measures.
“We are staging a protest this morning from 9:00 AM. The entire hospital staff will be on the road. I am giving this signal that we will be on the road for almost 2 hours to drive home our demand. There should be a modernised speed ramp around this stretch. I can’t understand. It is so tragic to see our colleague who hustles for bread losing a lot of blood to an accident.”
