Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, is set to join NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, a significant step highlighting party unity as the 2024 election approaches.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto, an agricultural economist and son of Baffour Osei Akoto—an esteemed founding figure of the UP tradition—is expected to bring strategic impact to the campaign in Ashanti, the NPP’s stronghold.
Insider sources indicate his participation will add weight to the campaign’s momentum in the region, underscoring the NPP’s resolve to “break the 8” and secure a third consecutive term in office.
The tour kicks off on Monday, November 4, 2024, and is scheduled to last two weeks, during which Dr Bawumia’s campaign will focus on a forward-looking vision for Ghana.
This includes advancing a digital economy, creating a robust credit system for economic growth, and job creation, establishing a business-friendly tax regime, and environmental sustainability, and bolstering the “gold-for-oil” policy to stabilize the cedi.
Dr Afriyie Akoto, known as the “farmers’ friend,” will focus on the substantial agricultural support provided by the Akufo-Addo government, with an emphasis on initiatives aimed at Ghana’s 3.6 million farmers.
His message will underscore the government’s agricultural policies and investments over the past eight years, encouraging the farming community to vote for continuity in the upcoming elections.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto’s presence alongside Dr Bawumia also reflects the NPP’s unity; despite competing for the party’s presidential nomination, all nine primary contestants, including Dr. Akoto, are now actively supporting the party’s flagbearer. This united front is a powerful statement in the NPP’s campaign strategy as it pushes for victory in 2024.
The Ashanti tour signifies a crucial phase in the NPP’s electoral efforts, rallying party members and supporters in one of the most influential regions ahead of the general elections.
