Deputy Transport Minister Hassan Tampuli has stated that there is no justification for increasing transport fares amid discussions among some transport unions, including the Concerned Drivers Association, about a potential price hike.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, October 30, Tampuli addressed these concerns, emphasizing that current conditions indicate a possible reduction in transport fares rather than an increase.
“There’s no basis for any increase of lorry fares between now and the next six months. Ghana is one of nine countries that have prices of petrol below $1. The prices we have in Ghana are one of the lowest anywhere.
“Let this message go out to the driver unions that are threatening an increase in lorry fares.”
He urged transport unions threatening fare increases to reconsider their stance, reinforcing that the government will not support unjustified fare hikes.
Tampuli’s comments come in response to growing public anxiety over potential increases in transport costs, which could burden commuters during a time of economic challenges.
