On October 19th, 2024 edition of *Key Points* on TV3, moderated by Alfred Ocansey, Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for what he described as undemocratic governance.
According to Prof. Gyampo, he had been an ardent supporter of President Akufo-Addo, to the extent that he personally traveled to his hometown just to cast his vote in favor of the president during the elections. However, he expressed his disappointment with the current administration, accusing the president of being intolerant of dissenting views.
Prof. Gyampo further alleged that the president’s inability to entertain opposing opinions has led to attempts to break the solidarity of labor unions, particularly following their decision to go on strike. UTAG have vowed not to back down unless the president demonstrates genuine commitment to fighting illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey,’ which has severely impacted Ghana’s environment.
“I drove from here to my hometown to go and vote for you [President Akufo-Addo]. You can’t tolerate dissent—what sort of government are you running?” Prof. Gyampo questioned, with clear frustration in his voice. His remarks reflect growing disillusionment among certain segments of the population who once believed in the president’s leadership but are now questioning the direction of his governance.
