The Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin will not be allowed to get away with his divisive decision that resulted in the declaration of four seats vacant, according to the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

The Minority’s appeal to remove some Members of Parliament who are running as Independent Candidates was granted by Alban Bagbin.

The Minority wants Amenfi Central NDC MP Kwakye Ackah, Fomena Independent MP Andrew Asiamah, NPP MP for Suhum Kojo Asante, and NPP MP for Agona West Cynthia Morrison removed for registering to run as independent candidates in the upcoming elections in December.

Speaker Alban Bagbin declared the four seats vacant today, Thursday, October 17, 2024, in favor of the petition to remove four current Members of Parliament.

The Majority Caucus said in a news release today, October 17, that the decision might be a component of a larger plan to manipulate the parliamentary majority.

The Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, quickly declared his side to be the new Majority following the Speaker’s decision, which the Majority Caucus saw confirmed their suspicions.

The NPP MPs contend that such acts pose a serious danger to the integrity of the legislative process and the idea of fair representation.

“We, the Majority, firmly vow that we will use every legal means at our disposal to oppose and thwart the Speaker’s unlawful actions. We will stop at nothing to reestablish the constitutional order that has been attempted to be undermined in Parliament.

“With the utmost urgency, we sincerely request that the Supreme Court hear the matter that the Majority Leader has placed before it. Because of the Speaker’s unlawful actions, the integrity of our parliamentary procedures and the stability of our democracy are under jeopardy.

“We call on civil society organizations, legal experts, and all stakeholders in Ghana’s democracy to speak out forcefully against this dangerous precedent and reaffirm the importance of respecting constitutional boundaries,” the statement emphasised. “We urge all Ghanaians to remain vigilant in defense of our constitution and the principles of democratic governance that have long been the bedrask of our nation.”
