John Mahama Leads in Ashanti Region Zongos as NASARA Collapses

Ashanti Region, Ghana – October 15, 2024: The National Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is gaining significant momentum in the Ashanti Region, following a week-long grassroots campaign that has left the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) NASARA wing in a weakened state.

From October 9 to 15, 2024, the NDC Zongo Caucus embarked on a vigorous door-to-door campaign across key constituencies, energizing voters in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.

The campaign, led by high-profile NDC leaders such as Alhaji Naziru Mohammed, Alhaji Nurudeen, Hajia Fati, and Hajia Amina, targeted constituencies with large Zongo populations, including Asawase, Ejura-Sekyedumase, and New Edubiase. These areas have long been seen as pivotal in the race for political dominance in the Ashanti Region, historically a stronghold for the NPP.

Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, the incumbent MP for Asawase, spearheaded efforts to consolidate his support base while other parliamentary candidates followed suit, actively engaging with residents from 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM daily. The door-to-door strategy, aimed at fostering direct engagement with voters, allowed the NDC to intimately connect with communities, addressing concerns around education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic empowerment.

The NDC’s message, centered on growth, inclusion, and sustainable development, struck a chord with Zongo communities, which have long felt marginalized under successive governments. The campaign’s success was evident as it reached a crescendo in Kumasi, where the Zongo Caucus held a series of impactful engagements with local residents, many of whom expressed renewed confidence in the NDC’s vision under former President John Dramani Mahama.

The collapse of NASARA, the NPP’s Zongo wing, became apparent as the NDC’s presence in the region gained traction. Residents voiced frustrations over unfulfilled promises and systemic neglect under the NPP, turning their attention to the NDC’s pledge for inclusive governance. Alhaji Naziru Mohammed, a leading figure in the campaign, noted the shift in voter sentiment, stating, “Zongo communities are no longer content with lip service; they are ready for real change, and the NDC is here to deliver it.”

As the NDC’s Zongo Caucus continues its tour across the Ashanti Region, the political landscape appears to be shifting. With voter turnout set to play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the 2024 elections, the NDC is leaving no stone unturned in rallying the Zongo electorate. Their message is clear: this election is about resetting Ghana’s course for a brighter, more inclusive future.

The campaign’s success thus far signals a potential upset in traditionally NPP-dominated areas, as the NDC’s Zongo Caucus solidifies its presence. With just weeks to go before the elections, all eyes are on Ashanti Region, where the NDC hopes to secure a critical foothold in the race for both parliamentary seats and the presidency.
