John Dramai Mahama is the NDC’s presidential candidate
The National Democratic Congress presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the Electoral Commission for disqualifying Bernard Mornah and his PNC from the presidential race.
Addressing a crowd at a campaign event, the former president described the electoral body as discriminatory towards certain political parties.
According to him, he cannot understand why the People’s National Convention was not allowed on the ballot paper, accusing the Jean Mensa-led EC of wrongful disqualification.
“There are 13 people who were qualified to be on the ballot paper, but unfortunately, our brothers in the PNC were wrongfully disqualified. I do not understand how the PNC were not allowed to be on the ballot paper,” he said.
Mahama controversially stated that some individuals qualified to contest in the presidential elections are not worthy opponents compared to Bernard Mornah, questioning the EC’s decision and approach during the approval process.
“The PNC is a more worthy party than several parties that I see on the ballot paper. That’s the issue we have with the Electoral Commission. Sometimes they are discriminatory because there are some people on this ballot paper who Bernard Mornah qualifies more to be here than those people, and I know it will provoke controversy, but I mean it,” Mahama stressed.
It will be recalled that the Electoral Commission, in a press announcement on September 20, 2024, disqualified 11 aspirants from the presidential race, including the PNC.
Citing the grounds for the disqualification of the PNC, led by Bernard Mornah, the EC explained that Mornah submitted incomplete particulars of supporters for his nomination.
Additionally, he used registered voters from one district to support his nomination in other districts. His form also contained varying signatures from some supporters, and in some cases, the same signatures were submitted for different supporters. This is why the EC decided to disqualify him.
Bernard Mornah has filed a suit against the EC to challenge his disqualification in court.
