According to him Adom Online, the Agona Swedru District Court has issued an injunction against Agona West Member of Parliament, Cynthia Morrison, preventing her from presenting herself as an independent parliamentary candidate in the upcoming 2024 general elections. The court further restrained the Electoral Commission (EC) from accepting or proceeding with Morrison’s nomination until the case is fully resolved.
This legal development follows a lawsuit filed by Emmanuel Addison, Solomon Nyarko, and Harrison A. Aglago, all National Democratic Congress (NDC) branch executives in the Agona West constituency. The plaintiffs are challenging Morrison’s eligibility to run as an independent candidate in the area, citing residency issues.
According to the plaintiffs, Morrison is not a resident of Agona West but rather of Agona East, which they argue disqualifies her from contesting for the parliamentary seat in the constituency.
Morrison, who has represented Agona West for the past eight years under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket, first won her parliamentary seat in the 2016 elections. However, after two terms in office, her bid for re-election through the NPP came to a halt when she lost the party’s parliamentary primary held on April 12, 2024. She received 152 votes, while her opponent, Christopher Arthur, emerged victorious with 240 votes.
Following her defeat, Morrison announced her decision to run as an independent candidate, a move that has been met with both political and legal opposition.
The court’s ruling effectively stalls Morrison’s independent bid, leaving the resolution of the matter to future legal proceedings. As the case unfolds, the decision could have significant implications for both the upcoming election and Morrison’s political future.
