In a bold move to raise awareness about the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” Catholics with the Accra Archdiocese have organized a nationwide environmental prayer walk.

The event, which kicked off today, is aimed at urging the government to take stronger action against the destruction of the country’s natural resources.

Hundreds of Catholic faithful, including priests, nuns, and lay members, marched through major cities and towns, chanting prayers and carrying placards that read, “Save Our Forests,” “Stop Galamsey Now,” and “Protect God’s Creation.”

The initiative, spearheaded by the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, comes as the country continues to grapple with the devastating effects of illegal mining on water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves.
