Social media uproar over Lands Minister’s claim he drinks tap water every day

Some social media users are expressing dissatisfaction with the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, over his recent claim that he drinks tap water every day.

Jinapor, who also serves as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Damongo in the Savannah Region, made the assertion during an interview with Joy News on October 9, 2024.

He stated that tap water is his daily source of drinking water, even claiming that on the day of the interview, he had already quenched his thirst with tap water.

“I drink it every day; even this morning, I drank water from the tap. I drink it every day,” Jinapor said.

However, after footage of the interview was shared on social media, many netizens criticized the minister, accusing him of defending the ruling government, particularly in relation to recent calls to combat illegal mining, which has severely polluted water bodies across the country.

One social media user wrote, “That guy is a pathological liar. Nobody should take him seriously. A state of emergency is what we need now to halt illegal mining operations so the military can fully concentrate on their duties, not this hide-and-seek approach.”

Another user added, “I can’t believe anything he says anymore. If he can lie about small things, he can lie about everything. I’m not sure he even uses tap water to brush his teeth or cook food.”

Some users pointed out that drinking water from a privately dug borehole with regular treatment is not the same as drinking tap water provided by the Ghana Water Company, which depends on water bodies heavily polluted by illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

“Drinking tap water from your backyard borehole dug as deep as about 30 feet with regular treatment is not the same as tap water from the Ghana water company, which depends on water bodies polluted by galamsey. This one should get out of here with his ….”

The uproar continued, with criticisms extending to the ruling NPP government. “No sense of urgency, no respect for the citizens. Are these the people we expect to fix Ghana? We must be joking,” another user said.

“Let’s invite him to a studio and make him drink tap water live on air. This NPP government has no shame. Under this NPP of Nana Addo and Bawumia, don’t trust even a pastor or an imam working for this government.”
