Election 2024: Don’t vote based on religion

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mampong and Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has urged Ghanaians to avoid letting religious considerations influence their voting choices in the upcoming general elections on December 7.

Addressing a crowd during a campaign tour led by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong specifically called on the Christian community to reject any attempts to use Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s religion as a reason not to support him in the presidential race.

He stressed that Dr Bawumia’s faith should not be a divisive issue in the country’s political discourse, particularly given Ghana’s long-standing tradition of interfaith harmony.

Mr Ampratwum-Sarpong made an impassioned appeal, highlighting that Dr Bawumia, although now a practising Muslim, has a deep understanding of Christianity, having been a Christian earlier in his life. He urged Ghanaians to focus on the candidate’s abilities and vision for the country, rather than their religious affiliations.

“My fellow Christians, some people will attempt to convince you to vote against Dr Bawumia because of his religion. Heed not. Dr. Bawumia used to be a Christian and he understands Christianity.

“Moreover, Christians and Muslims have always coexisted peacefully. Let’s not disturb that.”
