The Ghanaian government has intensified efforts to tackle illegal mining (galamsey) by strengthening “Operation Halt,” a military-led initiative aimed at curbing the environmental destruction caused by these activities. Under this operation, the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to key galamsey areas, particularly river bodies and forest reserves, which are now classified as “red zones” for mining.

The government has also committed long-term financial and logistical support to sustain the operation, ensuring that military efforts will not be hindered by resource shortages. In addition, speed boats have been procured for river patrols, and mercury-free gold processing machines are being distributed to help small-scale miners adopt safer practices. This move is complemented by the ongoing training of river guards and the prosecution of illegal miners with the support of the Attorney-General’s office.

Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor emphasized that the government’s fight against galamsey will be relentless and transparent, urging Ghanaians to collaborate in safeguarding the environment.
