2025 AFCON Qualifiers: A point after two games not good enough for Black Stars

Former Black Stars coach, Charles Kwabla Akonnor has described the team’s start in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers as disappointing.

After back-to-back wins in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic, Ghana were hoping to build on their momentum but were stunned with a 1-0 defeat against Angola in their opener of the AFCON qualifiers at the Baba Yara Stadium before a 1-1 draw against Niger which leave at the 3rd spot with a point.

However, Akonnor, reflecting on the performances of the team in their first two games said the team has not been good enough after amassing a point out of a possible six.

“It’s not good to play two matches and get one point, but I know and hope they will bounce back,” Akonnor told Graphic Sports.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars will resume their qualifying games with a doubleheader against Sudan in the Matchday three and four games.

The first leg of the doubleheader will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, with the return leg set for October 14 at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.

After opening camp with 11 players on Monday at the Accra Sports Stadium, the rest of the invited players are expected to join the team’s camp later today for their second training session.
