Spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Gideon Boako, has condemned persons involved in illegal mining activities, particularly those who mine in water bodies.

According to him, such actions are inherently evil due to their devastating impacts on the environment and the country’s water resources.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, he made these remarks in an interview on Peace FM on Monday, October 7, 2024, pointing out that the pollution of the water resources threatens the livelihoods of communities that depend on clean water for cooking, drinking, farming, and other activities.

Dr. Boako called for collective efforts to tackle the galamsey menace, urging both government officials and citizens to take a stand against illegal mining activities.

He reiterated Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s stance on galamsey, noting its negative impact on the environment.

“Dr Bawumia’s position on illegal mining and mining everywhere and using any means to mine and in the end destroying the environment, and those with licenses to mine and the kind of mining they are engaged in is that this is not good and they are destroying the land. The most painful part is those mining on our water bodies.

“The water bodies that we all use for our cooking and drinking purposes are not good at all. It is evil to mine in water bodies. Anything that will destroy human lives is evil and must not be countenanced,” he stated.

Public discussions on illegal mining activities resurfaced in the country following a recent statement by the Ghana Water Limited that the activities of illegal miners have disrupted water supply in the Cental Region.
