It is wise to rally behind Bawumia to drive the digitalization agenda – Kalybos

Ghanaian comedian and actor Richard Kweku Asante, popularly known as Kalybos, has called on Ghanaians to rally behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s push for digitalization.

Speaking at a meeting with the Ghana Bloggers Association, led by President Andre Mustapha Nii Okai Inusah, online writers, and influencers in Accra on October 4, 2024, Kalybos noted that the ability to stream movies and other content online has become crucial for industry professionals.

“These things have their basis in digitalization. If a candidate is coming… We, in the creative arts industry, know what is going on right now. With how everything is evolving, it is wise to champion behind him and get to know that this is the platform where we are going, and this is what is going to help us in the long run,” he said.

He further emphasized the importance of the Ghana Card, comparing it to the social security number in other countries.

“Through digitalization, people are able to stream our movies and all that.

“The Ghana Card has been the best thing that has ever happened to every Ghanaian in Ghana. When you travel outside, it is surprising to realize that you can’t do anything without your social security number, a number that identifies you. That is what we are dealing with on the Ghana Card.”

Kalybos also drew attention to the success of the Nigerian film industry, which has seen exponential growth thanks to partnerships with global giants like Netflix and Amazon.

He lamented that Ghana lacks the necessary infrastructure to match this progress but noted that with the right leadership, this could change.

“We need agencies built in Ghana. Nigeria has been able to get a Netflix hub. Without infrastructure or mechanisms to run the digital space, you can’t achieve much.

“Nigeria’s creative industry has thrived with the presence of Netflix and Amazon agencies. The same needs to happen in Ghana. We in the industry know what’s going on, so if a candidate is prioritizing digitalization, it’s worth championing behind him.”

Joseph Cudjoe, the Minister for Public Enterprises and a member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team for the 2024 elections, who was present at the meeting, also assured bloggers, online writers, and influencers of a major boost to their industry should Bawumia win the upcoming elections.

According to Cudjoe, the Vice President prioritizes digitalization, which will drive the growth of the digital content industry, creating more opportunities for its stakeholders.
