UN Ghana calls for peaceful protests, collective action against galamsey

Charles Abani, UN Resident Coordinator for Ghana has emphasised the importance of responsible mining and sustainable development, urging all stakeholders to work together for a common good.

He stressed the detrimental effects of galamsey, including exacerbating poverty, damaging livelihoods, polluting the environment, negatively impacting health and water resources, disrupting peace, and fueling illicit financial flows.

In a statement sighted by Citi News on Saturday, he urged all protesters to maintain a peaceful and responsible approach and called on the police to uphold professionalism while protecting law and order and respecting human and civil rights.

He also appealed to leaders across various sectors in Ghana, including government, national institutions, political parties, traditional and religious institutions, civil society, and the private sector, to collaborate in addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining.

Abani reaffirmed the organisation’s support for actions aligned with the #PactfortheFuture, focusing on sustainability, climate action, environmental protection, and pollution control.

These efforts aim to secure a peaceful and brighter future for current and future generations. The statement concludes with a call for unity and collective ambition to ensure Ghana’s success in overcoming the challenges of illegal mining.
