I Won’t Accept Even A Bottle Of Water In Government Meeting

Kenneth Koomson, the Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, emphasized his commitment to integrity in recent remarks regarding the upcoming nationwide strike.

The strike, set to begin on October 10, 2024, aims to pressure the government into addressing the rampant illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “Galamsey,” which have caused widespread environmental damage.

Speaking on the issue, Koomson reiterated his strong stance, stating, “I have my integrity to protect, and I will not accept even a bottle of water in such meetings.”

This statement highlights the seriousness with which he views the government’s lack of decisive action, as well as the role of organized labour in holding the government accountable for the devastating effects of illegal mining.

The strike follows an ultimatum issued by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), which called for immediate government intervention in the galamsey crisis.

With the government failing to meet the TUC’s demands by the September 30 deadline, the organized labour movement has now decided to go ahead with the industrial action.

Koomson’s remarks expresses the significance of the protest, which will involve public and civil servants staying home until the government takes concrete steps to halt the destructive mining activities.

The strike also seeks to ensure the preservation of the country’s rivers, farmlands, and forest reserves, which have been severely impacted by galamsey operations.
