Organised Labour to meet NLC today over nationwide strike against galamsey

The National Labour Commission (NLC) is set to meet today, Wednesday, October 2 over a proposed industrial action by Organised Labour due to the government’s inaction on the illegal mining canker, commonly known as galamsey.

Organised Labour has declared a nationwide strike effective October 10, 2024, over the government’s failure to take decisive action to address the escalating illegal mining menace.

The Executive Secretary of the NLC, Ofosu Asamoah has been reacting to the development in an interview with Citi News.

“This is more of a strike in the political circle than one of the employer-employees or worker relations or an industrial dispute. We just got a note of it and the commission will be sitting and we will look at the way forward. Fortunately, the strike is intended to begin on October 10 so we have time to look at it.

“The strike is an industrial action. The purpose for which they are striking is a bit complex for us. But then, like I said, the commissioners will meet on Wednesday, and then we look at the way to go.”

Organised Labour, other unions and associations have all issued statements making demands for the declaration of a state of emergency against the menace and a ban on all forms of mining until a sustainable solution is found.
