The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, has expressed deep concern regarding the impending nationwide strike declared by Organised Labour.
The strike, set to begin on October 10, 2024, is in response to the government’s failure to address the pressing issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Organised Labour, representing various unions and workers’ groups, had called on the government to act before the end of September.
Ofosu Asamoah in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Tuesday stated “It is very worrying. If you even listen to the way I speak, you will know that I am worried because how can we have the whole of the labour force in Ghana being on strike? That will be a very massive loss to the government and the people of Ghana.”
He highlighted the potential economic repercussions of such a widespread strike, noting that the current economic situation in Ghana is already challenging.
“Our present economic situation is not the best. If we are going to lose all that, I don’t think it is good for us,” he added.
Asamoah expressed hope that the government would take immediate steps to address the concerns raised by Organised Labour to prevent the strike from taking place.
“I am sure the government will take immediate steps to address their concerns,” he said.
He also noted that the NLC would meet on Tuesday, October 2 to deliberate on the Organised Labour’s decision.
