A key dialogue between Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has reiterated the need for the establishment of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and assembly centers in Ghana.
This, the groups say will help provide valuable training opportunities for tertiary education students.
The dialogue, held on October 1, 2024 in Accra examined the role of the petroleum sector, the environment, and anti-corruption in political manifestos, with a particular focus on the potential of EV manufacturing to drive economic growth and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
“While the current government has made strides in attracting foreign companies to assemble vehicles in Ghana, the world is rapidly shifting towards EVs,” said Denis Gyeyir, Africa Senior Programme Officer with the NRGI.
“This is a prime opportunity for Ghana to leapfrog traditional manufacturing and establish itself as a regional hub for EV production, utilizing our abundant green minerals like lithium and cobalt,” he added.
Some of the experts at the event argued that failing to embrace EV manufacturing would result in Ghana becoming a dumping ground for second-hand fuel-powered vehicles, further exacerbating environmental concerns and hindering the nation’s transition to a greener future.
“Building local EV assembly plants would not only create jobs and stimulate economic growth but also provide a valuable training ground for tertiary students interested in this burgeoning sector added,” Mr. Gyeyir said
The dialogue brought together representatives from key political parties to discuss their respective manifestos and how they plan to address the challenges and opportunities presented by energy transition.
The event provided a crucial platform for CSOs and experts to engage directly with policymakers and advocate policies that promote sustainable development and responsible resource management.
