Joy Sports’ Muftawu Nabila Abdulai named 2024 GJA Sports Journalist of the Year

Muftawu Nabila Abdulai has been named Sports Journalist of the Year at the 2024 Ghana Journalists Association Awards, held on Saturday, 28th September 2024.

His compelling story, “GFA declares $7.9m prize money instead of $9m”, published in December 2023, which revealed how the nation lost approximately $1.1 million of its World Cup 2022 prize money, was recognised as the best and most impactful sports story of the year.

The detailed and meticulously researched piece, which exemplified exceptional journalism ethics, outshone other entries reviewed by the judging panel.

Since breaking into the media industry over a decade ago, Muftawu Nabila has consistently made headlines with some of the most significant and newsworthy stories. Thanks to his reliable sources and near-perfect accuracy in reporting, he earned the nickname ‘FillaMan,’ a nod to his 99.9% success rate in breaking stories.

In 2019, he placed second in the prestigious AIPS Awards and followed that up with a third-place finish in the African rankings in 2021.

Many of his peers recognised him as the best journalist in both 2020 and 2021, a reflection of his dominance and the far-reaching impact of his reporting during that period.

Muftawu Nabila has continued to excel, maintaining his leadership in sports journalism throughout 2022 and 2023, with his attention-grabbing stories that have shaped the media landscape in Ghana.
