Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto Sub-Committee on the Economy, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, says the call by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for an audit of the voter’s register is coming too late.
Speaking on TV3’s Business Focus with Paa Kwesi Asare, the former Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee noted that the general election is just 81 days away and that the request could delay the entire election process.
“My understanding is that they are calling for an audit of the voters’ register. I think it’s too late in the game. December 7th is 81 days away. Are they prepared to delay the election date?” he questioned.
Dr. Assibey-Yeboah explained that the Electoral Commission had already displayed the register for people to check their names and report any issues, including names of the deceased. He emphasized that the Electoral Commission operates under established processes and timelines.
“There are laid-down processes. We do the registration, we do the mop-up, then there is a display of the register for you to check your name and report names of the deceased. So, we’ve passed that stage,” he underscored.
He asserted that the flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, is expressing frustration due to his own challenges and that his recent criticisms of pastors, chiefs, and others stem from this frustration. Dr. Assibey-Yeboah believes the NDC’s request will not change the outcome of the 2024 general election.
Supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress on Tuesday September 17 took to the streets in all 16 regional capitals of the country for the party’s “Enough is Enough” demonstration. They protested alleged discrepancies in the 2024 voter register. The NDC raised concerns about the provisional voters register, citing issues such as bloating of the electoral roll in some polling stations, which they claimed were attempts by the Electoral Commission to rig the December 7 polls in favor of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
