A group calling itself Walk Ghana for Peace has requested the intervention of the international community in the ongoing dispute between the Electoral Commission and political parties concerned about discrepancies in the voters register.

The convenor of the group, Faustina Dambie, in a statement released on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, emphasized that the growing number of election-related disputes in each election period poses a significant threat to the country’s democracy, peace, and stability.

The statement indicated that the intervention of the international community and traditional leaders is needed to address the discrepancies raised by concerned political parties in the voters register before the December polls.

“We believe that the involvement of esteemed chiefs and neutral international bodies such as the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and European Union (EU) will facilitate constructive dialogue and help address discrepancies in the electoral roll, as raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other concerned parties,” the statement said.

It added “Ghana is renowned for its stability and democratic values in Africa. However, the increasing frequency of election-related disputes poses a significant threat to the nation’s peace and stability. It is imperative that all stakeholders come together to ensure a transparent and peaceful electoral process.”

Political parties, particularly the National Democratic Congress, have called for a forensic audit of the voters register due to alleged discrepancies.

As part of their efforts to ensure a free and fair election in December 2024, the NDC and some concerned Ghanaians have taken to the streets to protest against the Electoral Commission nationwide.
