The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has asked the National Democratic Congress to strictly adhere to the arrangements regarding their nationwide protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
The Police have also asked the party to abide by all laws and regulations regarding the protest.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, noted that “The organisers have also been informed of their duty to abide by all other laws since they will be held responsible for any breaches.”
“We would like to urge the organisers and all participants in the demonstration to adhere to these arrangements and ensure full compliance with all laws and regulations.”
ACP Ansah-Akrofi indicated that the agreed routes for the demonstration in all 16 regions had been duly conveyed to the organisers.
“The organisers of the demonstration have been duly notified of their responsibilities under Section 3 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491) as indicated below: Section 3 – Responsibility of Organisers and Other Persons: (1) Where at any special event any damage is caused to any public property, the organisers, or any other persons found to have been responsible for the damage caused shall be liable to pay for the cost of the damage.”
“(2) Any person taking part in a special event shall obey the directions of police officers safeguarding the proper movement of other persons and vehicles and generally maintain order.
“(3) Any person taking part in a special event shall conduct himself in such a manner as to avoid causing confusion, disorder, or the obstruction of traffic,” she further stated.
