ECG to replace 250,000 meters in Accra East Region

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched a major initiative to replace 250,000 meters in its Accra East region.

Starting Monday, September 2, 2024, the meter replacement project will be undertaken by contractors across six districts.

The process will ensure that any outstanding credit balances on existing meters are transferred to the new ones within 48 hours. Additionally, any debts associated with old postpaid meters will also be transferred to the new meters.

The ECG anticipates that the new meters will resolve issues such as inaccurate billing, frequent power outages, and difficulties with prepaid meter recharging. The upgrade is expected to enhance revenue collection and reduce commercial losses.

Addressing journalists in Accra, the Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama said “This exercise started sometime back. it has a huge success story attached to it. This exercise has led to over 30% increment in our revenue already.

“This exercise has provided us with some massive visibility on the meters that have been installed, that we know their real-time value, we know how much revenue they bring to the company. It has reduced our losses in certain areas drastically. Please don’t touch these meters.”

He also appealed to Ghanaians to support the company in recouping its revenue.

“Revenue mobilisation for ECG is key, this year being an election doesn’t mean you don’t have to consume electricity.

“You have to consume, and when you consume, you have to pay. And what’s the best way for us to get the money, is by proper metering and billing. Every customer of ECG is under an obligation to assist the company in recouping all its revenue. Please let’s be honest citizens and let’s assist in this exercise for the company to recoup its revenue.”
