Tensions escalate following Konkomba-Fulani ethnic clash

Tensions are rising in the Kpandai community in the Northern region due to a conflict between the Konkomba ethnic group and Fulani herdsmen.

This situation marks a departure from the tranquillity that was previously restored by the police and military forces in Bimbilla.

A series of unfortunate events unfolded when a Konkomba man, returning home from work, was assaulted by individuals suspected to be armed robbers. The assailants attempted to steal his motorbike, leading to a violent confrontation that left the man with multiple cutlass wounds.

The incident sparked outrage among the Konkomba tribesmen in Kpandai town. In retaliation, they attacked the house of the Fulani chief, setting it on fire, slaughtering his cattle, and seizing the meat.

In an interview with Nana Tuffour Boateng on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, the District Chief Executive for Kpandai, Emmanuel Kofi Atta Tatablata, expressed concern that the situation was spreading to other areas.

He revealed that he had received information suggesting that the attackers were planning nocturnal assaults.

“The situation is escalating as we speak now. In the morning the issue was only centred in Kpandai but as we speak now it is like it is escalating up to Blagyae, Nkagina, Etegari and some other areas and the information I am getting is they are saying they want to do more attacks in the night.

“So, we are beefing up the security agencies to try to take cover so that at least lives and properties can be at least protected.”

“It is a vast land, once you are going to the other side the attackers move to the other side as well…Now we heard that they have attacked the Nkagyina, they have killed more than 15 cows, they have burnt the houses that the Fulani sleep in and then equally done to Ketegeli.

“They have burnt their sleeping place, they have killed more than 10 cows at that place as well,” he stated.

Mr Tatablata said this was despite their engagement with the youth and other stakeholders to help end the attacks.
