PPP backs Mahama’s suspension of CJ, urges respect for due process

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has expressed strong support for the President’s suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the action as lawful and consistent with the 1992 Constitution.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 28, and signed by the party’s Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu, the PPP emphasised that the President acted within constitutional bounds by suspending the Chief Justice following the establishment of a prima facie case and in consultation with the Council of State.

“We wish to reiterate our firm belief that the suspension, as executed by the President, was lawful and in full compliance with due process,” the statement read.

The party noted that the Chief Justice was given an opportunity to respond to the allegations against her, and that the procedure followed highlights the President’s adherence to rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights.

While affirming the supremacy of the Constitution, the PPP cautioned against efforts to politicize or undermine the process.

The party also took aim at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for what it described as a confusing call to suspend the Chief Justice’s suspension, saying such a move contradicts constitutional order.

“The GBA’s stance could be interpreted as an attempt to suspend due process itself,” the party asserted, warning that such calls threaten democratic accountability and imply selective application of the law.

The PPP stressed that no individual or officeholder, including the Chief Justice, is above the Constitution, and that the principle of accountability must remain central to Ghana’s democracy.

Citing the 2018 removal of the Electoral Commission Chairperson, the party reminded the public that similar processes were upheld by the Supreme Court when due process was followed.

The statement concluded by urging all stakeholders to remain calm and allow constitutional procedures to unfold without obstruction.
