The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has officially inaugurated the reconstituted Governing Council of the University of Ghana.

During the ceremony, Iddrisu urged council members to uphold the university’s legacy and work towards elevating its profile in the global higher education landscape.

The minister emphasised the importance of dedication and strategic foresight in achieving this goal.

In a UG post on X, he charged the council to steer the university towards becoming a top-tier global institution, underscoring the significance of effective governance in shaping the institution’s future.

“UG holds a critical place in Ghana’s development journey and must continue to lead in academic excellence, innovation, and institutional integrity. The government remains committed to supporting the university’s strategic vision”, he indicated.

The newly appointed Chair of the University of Ghana Governing Council, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew described the institution as a “bedrock of academic excellence.”

She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and pledged to work closely with the university’s leadership in a spirit of partnership and visionary leadership.

Brew committed to realising the institution’s ambitious strategic priorities, stressing collaboration and effective governance to drive the university’s growth and success.

“I pledge to work closely with the university’s leadership in a spirit of partnership and visionary leadership to realise the institution’s ambitious strategic priorities”, she said.

The reconstituted Council includes a notable team of academics, professionals, and public servants, including Vice-Chancellor Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Dr Naa Alhassan Andani, Dr Kwesi Amakye-Boateng, Ms Precious Kyei Bonsu, Dr Abdul Karim Hatsu, Ms Doris Kisiwa Ansah, Prof Nana Akua Anyidoho, and Mr Michael Owusu Ansah.

Others are Mr John Dadzie Mensah, Prof Folassade Tolulope, Rev Fr Stephen Owusu Sekyere, Mr George Agyekum Donkor, Ms Tina Sackeyfio, Major Daniel Ablorh-Quarcoo (Rtd), Mrs Yvette Adounvo Atekpe, Dr Inusah Abdul-Nasiru, Mr Maradona Adjei Yeboah, Mr Bright Amansiah, and Mr Benjamin Nkumsah.

The newly inaugurated Governing Council of the University of Ghana is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the institution’s future. As the university embarks on its next growth phase, the council will provide strong governance, uphold academic freedom, and guide the institution’s strategic agenda.

The key areas of focus for the council include enhancing student experience, promoting impactful research, and fostering global partnerships. With a strong leadership team in place, the University of Ghana is poised to achieve its goals and solidify its position as a leading academic institution.
