Bawumia attributes NPP’s defeat to voter apathy in six regions

The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has identified voter apathy in six regions as a major factor behind the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections.

The regions, he noted, are Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Bono, and Central.

Speaking during day three of the NPP’s “Thank You” tour in the Ahafo Region on Monday, April 28, Bawumia highlighted the significant number of abstentions recorded in these areas, stressing the urgent need for the party to address the issues that led to the low voter turnout.

“Six regions counted for those who abstained in the election. The Greater Accra region accounted for 571,000, the Ashanti region 489,000, the Eastern region 258,000, the Central region 230,000, 164,000 persons in the Western region and 100,000 voters in the Bono region.

“These six regions were our problem, and they are our strongholds as well. The situation would have been different if they had come out to vote,” he said.

In addition to voter apathy, Dr. Bawumia further cited several other contributing factors to the party’s defeat, including the arrogance of power, the high cost of living, the failure to reshuffle government officials, the introduction of the E-Levy, and the controversial haircut policy.
