Dr. Frank Amoakohene is the Ashanti Regional Minister
Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene is championing the Ashanti Festival as a vehicle for regional unity, trade, tourism, and development, transcending partisan politics.
Speaking at the festival’s cultural and traditional food exhibition at the Kumasi Centre for National Culture, Dr. Amoakohene pledged to institutionalize the event annually to sustain regional cohesion and celebrate Ashanti heritage.
Dr. Amoakohene further stated that, in line with the President’s vision, he is committed to fostering unity within the Ashanti Region.
He stressed the importance of continuous collaboration and support, rather than only engaging residents during election periods.
The month-long Ashanti Festival, initiated by Dr. Amoakohene, is currently underway, highlighting the region’s cultural richness while addressing key development areas including health, education, sanitation, sports, tourism, and inclusive governance.
The festival aims to foster peace and position the Ashanti Region as a leading hub for culture and development.
Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the festival’s commitment to inclusive governance, ensuring that no group is left behind in the national development agenda. He acknowledged that politics has historically divided the region, hindering collective progress.
He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has urged inclusive governance that engages with all residents in the region. “The Ashanti Festival is part of the government’s broader agenda of engagement,” he explained.
The festival originated from a discussion about enhancing Easter entertainment options in the region and has since evolved into a platform promoting various sectors of the local economy.
Highlights of the festival so far include a Science and Technology Fair, showcasing student innovations and STEM skills, and a cultural display where students re-enacted Ashanti traditions and combat techniques, instilling a sense of pride in their heritage.
Dr. Amoakohene praised the Ghana Education Service for collaborating on the educational components of the festival.
The Minister also outlined the initiative’s goal of integrating healthcare, the creative industry, education, and Kumawood (the local film industry) to foster mutual support and collaboration.
He noted the potential for partnerships between designers and Kumawood for costume creation and product promotion, adding that plans are underway for Kumawood stars to entertain students at Senior High Schools across the region.
