Mahama orchestrated CJ’s suspension – Nana B claims

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of orchestrating the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

According to him, the President’s decision was premeditated, citing what he described as a prior announcement of such intentions.

He referenced a past meeting between President Mahama and lawyers during which the President allegedly expressed dissatisfaction with the judiciary and promised changes if elected.

President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, following the establishment of a prima facie case related to three petitions calling for her removal.

The decision, made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, has led to the formation of a five-member committee to investigate the matter.

In response, a coalition of political parties, including the NPP, has announced plans to stage a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, to protest the suspension.

Speaking in an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, April 24, Henry Nana Boakye claimed the country’s democracy is under threat and called on citizens to resist what he described as an attack on the judiciary.

“Our democracy is under attack, our judiciary is under attack. We have a President who advertised his intentions to remove the Chief Justice. This is just a plan in motion.

“This is a pre-meditated activity in motion. Before the 2024 elections, he met a group of lawyers in the Volta region, where he said he was not happy with the judiciary and that he would make changes to the leadership of the judiciary if voted into power.

“Today, we have a case where the President has orchestrated the suspension of a Chief Justice, it has never happened before,” he stated.
