Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced a significant policy shift, stating that the government will no longer fund the travel of supporters to international tournaments.
The move, according to the minister, is aimed at ensuring responsible use of public funds and encouraging private sector involvement in the promotion of sports.
While the decision may not sit well with some sections of Ghana’s passionate supporter base, Adams believes that corporate Ghana can play a crucial role in bridging the gap.
Speaking on the matter, Adams made his position clear: “I don’t think that government must spend money to fly fans to tournaments. We can bring corporates to send supporters, but not government money,” he said on Starr FM.
In previous tournaments, the government has often borne the cost of transporting and accommodating large contingents of fans, especially during major competitions like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the FIFA World Cup.
The new direction signals a departure from that tradition, potentially redefining the dynamics of fan involvement at international events.
