GJA Demands Police Intervention Over NPP Official’s Threat to Journalists

By Issah Mohammed/ Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, April 23, GNA – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has pushed the Police to take firm action against Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third national vice chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for allegedly threatening TV3 journalists.

According to the GJA, Alhaji Masawudu publicly threatened to assault any TV3 media personnel, a subsidiary of Media General, who attended any NPP event.

The threat reportedly occurred a day after he dropped the media organisation’s microphone to the ground during a press briefing by the party on April 16, 2025.

The GJA noted that his actions were influenced by the NPP’s decision to withdraw from all Media General platforms following a disagreement.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Mr. Albert Dwumfour, President of the GJA, stated that while the decision to withdraw was not unprecedented in Ghana’s democratic context.

However, it was concerning when such actions escalated into violence and threats to life.

“We find the actions and comments of Alhaji Masawudu very reckless, reprehensive and regrettable.

“His actions and comments are not only a threat to human life; they are also a threat to the lives of the rule of law and our democracy,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfour called on the NPP to immediately dissociate itself from the actions of its national executive.

He emphasized that the media serves the public interest and does not require an invitation to respond to matters of public concern.

“So whenever and wherever the public interest calls, the media have a constitutional invitation and obligation to respond to the call…. Thus, unless the matter or issue is private in nature,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfour urged the leadership of the NPP and Media General to resolve their differences amicably.

He called on TV3 journalists to act responsibly and avoid actions that could exacerbate the situation.

“It is important for the media to hold duty bearers to account. But it is also imperative for the media to promote peace, not conflict; unity, not division, and tolerance, not tension,” he said.
