Ghana Tourism Authority targets 200 paragliders – CEO

As the annual Kwahu Easter festival kicks into full gear, the Ghana Tourism Authority aims to increase paragliding flights from 138 last year to 200 this year on the iconic Odweanoma Mountain.

This year, more women are conquering their fears to enjoy the breathtaking experience of soaring through the clouds above the scenic Kwahu landscape.

A number of tourists have arrived at Odweanoma Mountain, eager to experience the thrill of tandem paragliding.

A key highlight of the 20th edition is that more women are boldly stepping up to take part in what many call a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

” I was the first to fly today as a woman, I came saw and conquered, I encourage other women to enjoy this experience. It is really breathtaking” Abigail Ashley shared.

Another Added “I am confident this would be an experience to live with for a lifetime. I am glad to be here.”

An increase in flights is expected to boost revenue for tourism, a fourth contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) projects an increase in paragliding participation to 200 flights this year, up from 138 in 2024.

Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Maame Efua Houadjeto pointed out that last year, over 7,000 revelers representing 49 percent increase were at the Kwahu festival.

She was hopeful of sustained efforts to increase patronage to the Kwahu Easter destination.

The Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Yussif Issaka Jajah, urged the Kwahu South Assembly to aggressively promote tourism in the area as a means of alleviating poverty and boosting the local economy.

“Aligning with our vision of ‘Resetting Ghana’ and enhancing the ‘Black Star Experience’. I urge the Kwahu South Municipal Assembly to prioritize aggressive tourism promotion in its development agenda, fostering a Public-Private Sector Partnership with active stakeholder involvement. By doing so, tourism can contribute significantly to poverty alleviation by creating livelihood opportunities, particularly for the unemployed, youth, and women,” he said.

The Eastern Regional Minister Rita Adjei Awatey emphasized the importance of tourism.

“Events like the paragliding festival highlight the tremendous potential of tourism in driving economic growth, creating jobs and promoting the cultural heritage of our people. This year’s festival is particularly significant as we continue to recover from the challenges of the past years. The festival not only provides a boost to our local economy but also serves as an opportunity to showcase the resilience and determination of the people of Kwahu and the entire Eastern Region,” she said.

She added “Through your participation, you are not only enjoying a wonderful experience but also contributing to the growth of the local businesses, and the hospitality industry in general.”

Rainstorm at in the early afternoon about 2:30pm disrupted the paragliding event. A total of 28 tourist flew on the first day.
