The Greater Accra Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded the swift release of a party-affiliated social media activist allegedly arrested by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) over a Facebook post as reported by Ghana Web.
According to party executives, the activist, whose identity has not been disclosed, was picked up for allegedly publishing false information concerning the Vice President.
The arrest has sparked backlash within the party, with members accusing the security agency of suppressing freedom of speech.
Leading the charge, former NPP General Secretary John Boadu condemned the arrest, describing it as a worrying trend of political intimidation. In a media engagement, Boadu criticized the use of state institutions to silence dissenting voices.
“They claim he said something on Facebook; a platform these young guys use to play around is what these people have taken as World Cup,” Boadu said, questioning the seriousness with which the matter is being treated.
He stressed that the NPP would not remain silent while institutions meant to serve all Ghanaians are allegedly weaponized against their supporters.
He also warned against undermining the country’s democratic gains, reminding Ghanaians of the sacrifices made to secure civil liberties.
Party executives from the Greater Accra Region joined Boadu in demanding the activist’s release, warning that they would not hesitate to resist attempts to stifle the voice of their members.
The NPP insists that the activist must be released unconditionally, urging authorities to respect the rule of law and the constitutional right to free expression.
